Acorus americanus (Sweet Flag) - photos and description
General: Wetland plant with long, sword-like leaves arranged in a fan like an Iris.
Flowers: Flowers grow in a spike-like spadix, a spadix was measured at 6.5 cm long by 1 cm wide. A spathe, resembling a leaf, grows above the spadix, spathe measured at 61 cm long by 9 mm wide.
Leaves: Leaves basal, sword-like, to 100 cm long, we measured a leaf at 1 cm wide.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 100 cm, we measured plants to 111 cm tall.
Habitat: Habitat is swamps and streams.
Abundance: Listed as uncommon in Checklist of the Vascular Plants of Saskatchewan.
Origin: Native.
When and where photographed: Took the above photos July 8th, river bank, boreal forest, about 375 km north east of our home in Regina, SK.
