Apocynum androsaemifolium (Spreading Dogbane) - photos and description
15 cm ruler for scale
General: Plants with a branching growth habit and red stems. Stems and leaves when broken exude a milky, white sap.
Flowers: Flowers bell-shaped, in clusters at end of stems from leaf axils, white with pink stripes. We measured flowers to 1 cm long. Fragrant.
Leaves: Leaves are all cauline, hang downwards, are opposite, oval, leaf highlighted above was 6.5 cm long and 3.5 cm wide. Stems and top of leaves are glabrous. Bottoms of leaves are pubescent.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 150 cm, plant shown above was 52 cm tall.
Habitat: Wooded areas and moist coulees.
Abundance: Common.
Origin: Native.
When and where photographed: Photos taken July 1st, sandy roadside, boreal forest, 400 km north east of our home in Regina, SK.
