Aquilegia canadensis (Wild Columbine) - photos and description
General: Woodland perennial, branching towards the top of the plant. The plants we observed were glabrous.
Flowers: Flowers nodding, very showy, having red sepals with spurs, pale yellow petals, and with golden stamens protruding beneath the corolla. Flowers about 5 cm in length.
Leaves: Leaves divided into 3 leaflets, which in turn are divided into 2 or 3 lobes. Leaves about 2.5 cm in width and length. Stem leaves alternate, nearly sessile at the top.
Height: Height is listed in Budd's Flora to 80 cm, we measured plants to 101 cm tall.
Habitat: Moist woodlands in the boreal Forest.
Abundance: Listed as fairly common in Checklist of the Vascular Plants of Saskatchewan.
Origin: Native.
When and where photographed: Photographed on June 20th in the Porcupine Hills, about 450 km northeast of our home in Regina, SK.
