Cornus sericea (Red-Osier Dogwood) - photos and description
Stems reddish-brown.
General: Shrub with many branches, the stems reddish-brown in colour. New stems pubescent.
Flowers: Flowers white with 4 petals and 4 stamens, growing in flat-topped panicles. We measured flowers at 7 mm diameter.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, ovate, lighter green in colour on leaf bottom than on top. We measured a leaf at 65 mm long by 44 mm wide. There are short hairs on top and bottom of leaves.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 2 m, we measured plants 3.3 m tall.
Habitat: Moist edges of thickets, woods, and coulees.
Abundance: Common.
Origin: Native.
Synonym: Listed in the field guides we use as C. alba, and C. stolonifera.
When and where photographed: We took the above photos on June 5th, moist ground on edge of aspen woodland, Fairy Hill, about 30 km north of our home in Regina, SK.
