Leucophysalis grandiflora (Large White Ground Cherry) - photos and description
General: Upright annuals with large, showy flowers. Plants have sticky foliage and are very hairy.
Flowers: Flowers are white with a yellow eye, and grow from upper leaf axils. We measured flowers to 45 mm diameter.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, entire, stalked, ovate to lanceolate, blade measured at 55 mm long by 35 mm wide. Stems and leaves pubescent.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 60 cm, we measured plants to 33 cm tall.
Habitat: Sandy soil in disturbed areas in open woodlands.
Abundance: This plant is rare, ranked as an S3 (as of 2021) by the Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre.
Origin: Native
Synonym: Listed in some of the field guides we use as Physalis grandiflora.
When and where photographed: Photos taken June 14th, disturbed, sandy soil in a forest clearing, boreal forest, about 475 km north east of our home in Regina, SK.
