Linum rigidum (Yellow Flax) - photos and description
General: Annual plants with a branching growth habit. Plant glabrous.
Flowers: Flowers paniculate, flat-topped, pale yellow and often with a red-eye. Flowers last only one day, often falling from the plant by early afternoon. We measured a flower at 23 mm diameter.
Leaves: Leaves cauline, alternate, linear, having a few teeth. Leaf highlighted above was 2 cm long and 2 mm wide.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 40 cm tall, we've measured plants to 34 cm tall.
Habitat: Open slopes and grassland in the prairies and parklands.
Abundance: Common.
Origin: Native.
When and where photographed: The above photos where taken June 16th, grassland in the Buffalo Grass Eco Reserve, 200 km south of Regina, SK, June 24th on grassland in Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park, 300 km west of Regina, SK, June 26th on prairie 70 km south of Regina, SK, and July 16th on prairie about 35 km north of our home in Regina, SK.
