Menyanthes trifoliata (Buck-Bean) - photos and description
General: Rhizomatous perennial plants native to bogs. Plants glabrous.
Flowers: Showy growing in a dense terminal raceme. The flowers have 5 petals, are white with long white hairs on the top surface of the petal. We measured a flower at 17 mm diameter, and measured a racemes at 8 cm long.
Leaves: Leaves are basal, trifoliate, leaflets elliptical to oblong, we measured a leaf at 2.5 cm wide and 5.5 cm long.
Height: We measured peduncles to 30 cm above the waterline.
Habitat: Bogs and marshes in the boreal forest.
Abundance: Common.
Origin: Native.
When and where photographed: Took the above photos June 5th, and June 14th, in a pitcher plant bog, boreal forest, east central Saskatchewan, about 400 km northeast of our home in Regina, SK.
