Primula incana (Mealy Primrose) - photos and description
All leaves basal; one leaf turned over to show the mealy underside
General: Plants have a slender growth habit with a single peduncle arising from a rosette of leaves. Underside of leaves and peduncle are yellow-white mealy.
Flowers: Flowers are pale lilac with a yellow eye, 5 petals, petals are cleft, grow in a dense umbel, and have a slight fragrance. Flowers were measured at 9 mm in diameter.
Leaves: Leaves are all basal in a rosette, spatulate, irregularly toothed with small teeth. Leaf blade measured at 30 mm long and 17 mm wide.
Height: Height listed in Budd's Flora to 30 cm, we've measured plants to 30 cm tall.
Habitat: Saline meadows in the prairies, parklands, and boreal ecoregions.
Abundance: Fairly common.
Origin: Native.
When and where photographed: Photographs taken June 14th, June 15th, and June 19th in a wet ditch near Hudson Bay, 400 km north east of Regina, SK, and July 3rd in a wet meadow, Meadow Lake Provincial Forest about 500 km northwest of our home in Regina, SK.
