Ribes oxyacanthoides (Northern Gooseberry) - photos and description
General: Low, thorny, early-flowering shrub, stems ascending or sprawling.
Flowers: Flowers in clusters of 1 to 3 along the stems, white, tube-like, the sepals spreading. We measured a flower at 10 mm diameter and 7 mm long.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, palmate, irregularly round-toothed. We measured a leaf at 16 mm diameter. Leaf undersides glandular hairy, particularly where the leaf joins its petiole.
Height: Height is listed in Budd's Flora to 100 cm, we measured plants to 87 cm tall.
Habitat: Moist woods, thickets, rocky prairie hillsides.
Abundance: Common.
Origin: Native.
When and where photographed: These photos were taken April 28th and April 30th, prairie hillside, Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, about 70 km west of our home in Regina, SK.
